Gav has now become accepted as the definition of a person who is at the same time gay and a chav, at least in most parts of England.

The Gav Tribe

Gay chavs identify strongly with the term “gav”.  This label is worn proudly and gives the gay chav a real feeling of belonging to a tribe that is red hot and at the same time the very essence of “cool”.  Want yer mates to know you’re a gav?  Get one of these gav teeshirts.

Definitions of Gay and Chav

Most people will know this, but just in case you’ve “been away” for about 50 years, here goes:

Gay:

These days, a gay person may possibly be happy, which is what the archaic definition of the word was, but the accepted meaning has for some years now been “homosexual”.

Chav:

This term may need some explanation, especially for our readers outside the UK, because it is very often misused.  Reading the British gutter press, you would think that chavs are rough, aggressive young men.  You would get the impression that they are all petty criminals, antisocial, witless and jobless, yet weighed down by gold jewellery and covered in the very latest branded sports gear.  You would expect to see them outside every convenience store drinking strong cider.  You would come to believe that they were to be avoided because you would only have to look at them to be rewarded with a mouthful of abuse or worse.

The reality is not quite as sensational.  In fact, like the new romantics, emos, goths and all the rest, chav is just a label given to a group of people, a tribe.  In this case, it’s a tribe that has, because of the behaviour of a minority of its members, got a bad name – just like the mods and rockers of the 1950s.  It is true that chavs often wear branded sports clothes and are often from the rougher part of town.  They can hardly be blamed for where they are born, and most chavs are actually well-groomed with smart haircuts, physically fit and make fiercely loyal friends.  They have a very sound set of values and highly-developed people skills, having been brought up in the real world of the people, as opposed to the often artificial civility of the middle and upper classes.  Oh, and most chavs have jobs just like “normal” people.

A gav is just a combination of the above two terms.

Becoming a Gav

There are two ways that lads become gavs.

1. A natural chav realises he is gay or happens to be gay

This is the most common scenario.  A chav boy approaches adulthood and at some point realises he is gay.  He has formed very strong bonds with his friends, as chavs tend to do, and it would be unthinkable to cut himself off from these friends.  Gavs in this group will sometimes “come out” to their chav mates, and because of their great sense of loyalty, this usually results in nothing more than a shrug of the shoulders, a hug, and maybe a quick “I always thought you might be” or a jokey “well just don’t think you’re getting your hands in me trackies!”  Occasionally the gav will get a bad reaction from his straight chav mates, but usually after a short time the former loyalties will override this initial reaction and things return to normal in the group.  Very rarely, a gav who comes out to his mates gets an aggressive reception and is excommunicated from the group permanently.  Because of the fear of this rarest of scenarios, some gavs keep their sexuality to themselves and, like other closet gays, will sometimes have a girlfriend or even get married.

2. A gay lad decides to adopt a chav identity

This route to gavness has really taken off lately.  Through the ages, some gay lads have always loved “a bit of rough”,

and today’s chav fits the bill perfectly, with his lean body, clean looks and hard, rough-and-ready masculine style.  So eagerly are some gay lads attracted to this group that they have, in increasing numbers, effectively become chavs themselves – that is to say they look and sound like chavs in every way, they hang around with chavs and basically, they are chavs.  Well, that is to say, gavs.  Nowadays a whole industry has been built around this group of people, selling photos and videos of gavs in, shall we say, various situations.  Gay magazines often have ads for gay chav DVDs, and premium rate phone lines inviting you to listen to Wez as he does something unspeakable involving his mate’s trackies behind the “offie”.  (For our non-UK readers, an offie is a slang term for a shop licensed to sell alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises.  Oh, and “trackies” are nylon or flannel trouser suits worn traditionally for sports.)

Is Calling Someone “Gav” an Insult?

Whether this term is an insult depends on whether the recipient views being called a gay chav an insult.  The true gav will never consider it insulting to be called a gav, unless he happens to be “in the closet” (which, for those of you still living in the Victorian age, means living his lifestyle in secret).

• Some people won’t object to being called gay, but will object to being called a chav.
• Some people won’t object to being called a chav, but will object to being called gay.

Both of the above will object to being called a gav.

If your name happens to be Gavin and you are also chavaphobic or homophobic, then you will have a problem these days every time someone calls your name!

Can a Gav be Bisexual?

The commonly accepted definition is based on gay and chav, and like the term gay, gav seems to have been adopted by those who are “out and proud” of their gay chav status.  In reality there are many bisexual chavs who would not be comfortable with the gav or gay chav term, because they don’t see themselves as gay or anything to do with the gay scene.  This group basically sees themselves as normal straight chav lads who just happen to like “doing it with a lad” now and then.  It’s unlikely that these chavs would go to gay pubs and clubs, preferring instead to take their chances of encountering other like-minded chavs in their day-to-day lives.

Finally

Most adults, thanks to the press, have a negative opinion of chavs, but these days only a tiny minority would have a strong negative view of gays.  So where does that leave the public perception of the gav?  Well, only time will tell, but one thing is for certain, the gav is here for good.
